Research

Associate Prof. Dr. Juliana Ferreira-Strixino graduated in Biomedical Sciences from Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho - UNESP (2000), MSc degree (2003) and Ph.D. (2007) in Medical Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo - USP - Ribeirão Preto – SP and carries out postdoctoral research at São Carlos Institute of Physics – IFSC/USP (2007-2009). She is currently responsible for the Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Vale do Paraíba - UNIVAP - São José dos Campos – SP.

Professor Juliana joined UNIVAP in 2009 as an Associate Professor and Researcher and created the PDT Lab, focusing mainly on Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), which is a treatment that combines light energy with a drug (photosensitizer), used in conjunction with molecular oxygen to elicit cell death (phototoxicity), and can be used to treat a variety of diseases (acne, psoriasis, cancers) as well as bacterial, fungal and viral infections treatments.

In 2019, she expanded her research field and created the PhotoBioS Lab (Photobiology applied to Health Lab), a research group aiming to evaluate cellular, biochemical and molecular mechanisms and events in Photobiomodulation (PBM) and PDT.

Photobios Lab multidisciplinary research strives to understand biological processes to elucidate light-based therapies' fundamental problems. The Lab works in Biophysics, emphasizing Photobiology, focusing mainly on Photodynamic Therapy, Cancer, Microbiology, Parasitology, Photosensitizers, and Spectroscopy.
